PATINAでは、英国の画家デイヴィッド・フィリップスの個展を開催する運びとなりました。
デイヴィッド・フィリップスはロイヤル・カレッジ・オブ・アートでファインアートを学んだ後、
グラフィックや建築の仕事を手掛け、また20年以上に渡りロンドンの美術大学で教鞭を取ってきました。
多岐に渡るアートやデザインの仕事に携わってきたなかで、近年「絵」による表現に回帰しています。
今回の展覧会では、ポストカードサイズの小作品を中心に60点余りを展示いたします。

Roads

One day in the spring as I was driving across the French countryside, I was struck by how the road that I was driving on reacted to the folded land. I saw something simple that I had never considered before. I saw that roads or
paths or any intervention placed on the landscape as means to travel are similar to making a drawing.

I began to make images of roads. I found that there was a perverse inexplicable interaction for every necessary avoidance of a natural obstacle. Roads are both reactions to the topology and also records of use. In this way they describe events and they describe form.

When I ‘discovered’ roads I was a little ashamed that I had previously not spent much time looking at them. As I began to understand how the roads described and drew landscape, I made many paintings examining these conditions.I have begun to assemble a vocabulary of roads. The rise, the corner, the dip, each has its character and quality. I am I think only just beginning.

デイビッド・フィリップス展覧会
「道」

ある春の一日、私は車でフランスの田舎道を走っていた。そこでふと走っている「道」と周囲の風景との関係に目が止まった。今まで見過ごしていたシンプルなものに気付いたのだ。自然の風景に切り込まれた道路や小道、それは筆で描かれた線と同じではないか、と思ったのである。

それから「道」を描き始めた。自然の障害物があるたびに、風景と不可解で妙な交わり方をする「道」。それは地形に呼応するものであり、また人や動物が通った記録でもある。

そんな「道」を発見し、今までそれに気付かなかったことを恥じた。そして風景の構成要素である「道」を改めて観察し、「道」にまつわる絵を描き始めた。上り坂、角、くぼみなど、「道」にも個性や特徴がある。そんな「道」を描く私の道も、始まったばかりなのである。
